PL/PDF v5.31 Released: Native Digital Signatures, Tagged PDF and AES-256 Encryption

PL/PDF OffX v5.31 is now available.

This release expands Oracle-native document generation with three major capabilities: native PAdES digital signatures, Tagged PDF support, and AES-256 PDF encryption.

PL/PDF OffX combines the complete PL/PDF SDK with the Microsoft Word template engine, allowing Oracle applications to generate PDF, PDF/A, PDF/UA, DOCX and XLSX documents directly from PL/SQL.

Version 5.31 extends this platform with new capabilities for trusted, accessible and protected PDF documents.

Native PAdES digital signatures

PL/PDF v5.31 introduces native Oracle PL/SQL digital signing for standards-based PDF signature workflows.

The new implementation supports:

PAdES-B-B
PAdES-B-T
SHA-256 with RSA
RFC 3161 timestamping

The native signing path runs inside Oracle and does not require a Java stored procedure or Bouncy Castle dependency.

PAdES-B-T signatures can obtain an RFC 3161 timestamp using either the native TSA client or a PL/SQL timestamp procedure.

Tagged PDF and accessible document workflows

PL/PDF v5.31 adds Tagged PDF generation with logical document structure in addition to the visual PDF page content.

The generated PDF can include structure trees, marked-content identifiers, document-language metadata and other structural information used by accessibility-oriented and PDF/UA workflows.

Tagged PDF generation is integrated directly into the PL/PDF document-generation process, so Oracle applications do not need a separate post-processing service to create the tagging foundation.

AES-256 PDF encryption

PL/PDF v5.31 also introduces modern AES-256 PDF protection.

The implementation uses AES-256 encryption with PDF Revision 6 password processing and supports:

user passwords
owner passwords
printing permissions
modification permissions
copying permissions
annotation and form permissions

Encryption is applied while PL/PDF generates the document, allowing sensitive PDFs to be protected before they leave the Oracle database.

Security, accessibility and trust inside Oracle

The common theme of PL/PDF v5.31 is that more of the complete document workflow can remain inside Oracle.

Applications can now generate documents, add structured PDF information for accessibility workflows, protect PDFs using AES-256 encryption and apply standards-based digital signatures within the same PL/SQL-oriented document platform.

These capabilities can be used for invoices, statements, contracts, forms, regulatory documents and high-volume batch document generation.
